Renovating or building a house can be a rollercoaster of joy and stress. Especially when you start laying out the plans for your dream home, then realize some of the things you wanted most cannot be done.

In today’s article, the experts at Doors Galore share their recommendations when it comes to choosing the internal doors that perfectly complement your space:
1. Think about how they will be fitted
We recommend you take this into account before starting the renovation work, especially if you are planning on changing the fitting style as well, not only the door.
For example, replacing a standard hinged door with a pocket door requires some alteration to the wall structure. If that wall plays an important role in the structure’s resistance, then these changes cannot be carried out, as they compromise the safety of the building.
So before starting the actual work, lay out a map of what type of doors you would like for each room. Then, check with a specialist if that kind of door can be installed in that specific area. Additionally, don’t forget to check if you are required by law to install fire doors for some spaces.
2. Consider the style of the house
Having doors that match the style of the house is the type of detail that goes unnoticed when it’s done right, yet can create a great discordant note when it’s missing.
For example, having a Victorian house with modern, flat doors can be quite unaesthetic. Just as having a contemporary furnished home, say in an industrial style, with an antique solid wood door. They are from two different universes and might be rather uneasy on the eyes (and mood).
That’s not to say mixing and matching can’t be done. After all, it’s a matter of preference. If you’re more of an eclectic person, and you like your home to match that side of your personality, then you might want to go for outstanding internal doors as a statement. In this case, you can compensate harmonize the space with less furniture and more neutral colours.
3. Functionality features
Last, but not least, it’s important to think about the functional features of the door. And you can think in at least three directions: visibility/transparency, sturdiness, and fire safety.
a. Visibility/transparency
Solid or see-through doors? Transparent or opaque glass? Depending on each room, you will have different preferences.
b. Sturdiness
While an internal door doesn’t have to be as sturdy as an external one, it’s still wise to opt for doors that are well-built in case you need to protect yourself from a threat.
c. Fire safety
Depending on the blueprint of your house, you might be required to have fire doors installed for some of the areas. If you are not sure whether you should install one or not, check with a specialist.
